Now that the midway point of the 2024 NFL season has passed, some would say that the league as a whole is somewhat mediocre and that there hasn’t been one team that has established itself as the clear favorite to win this winter’s Super Bowl.
However, there does seem to be a consensus on the best team in the NFC — that would be the Detroit Lions, who are coming off a 52-6 destruction of the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday and are tied for the league’s best record at 9-1.
Keyshawn Johnson said on Fox Sports 1’s “Speak” that to him, the Lions look like the best team in football right now.
Detroit is first in points scored and is an explosive, dangerous offensive team, and what makes their offense even more impressive is the fact that they arguably don’t have one transcendent superstar on the side of the football.
Quarterback Jared Goff is playing arguably the best ball of his life with 2,492 passing yards, 20 touchdown passes and a 73.0 percent pass completion rate through 10 games, but many still don’t consider him a truly elite player.
Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown is playing well, yet he is still short of being a household name, and Detroit’s running game consists of the tag team duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.
But it is perhaps their synergy that makes them an easy team for America to root for.
On the other hand, one should be concerned about the leg injury to defensive lineman Aidan Hutchinson, which could cost him the rest of the season, plus the fact that Goff still has his limitations.
But if the Kansas City Chiefs are beatable come playoff time, the Lions could be the one team in the NFL that is truly capable of ending the Chiefs’ Super Bowl reign, at least temporarily.
